Pattern Book: Carriage House

CARRIAGE HOUSE can function either as a single-family residence or a live/work space.  The house boasts tall triple-hung windows, piano nobile, front door with transom, and prominent stone lintels.  Dramatic arched and shuttered windows stretch across the terrace-level façade.  Accentuating the home’s loftlike appeal is a third-story master suite with a private, light-flooded bath secluded by louvered doors and walk-in closet.  From the top of the stairs, one looks down onto the piano nobile below.  The drama of height is accentuated by the unexpected curvature of the wall at the top of the landing.  If preferred, the space can be filled in with a second bedroom with private bath.  Builders and developers should note that this townhouse currently represents the most popular form in the U.S.  It is a cost-effective yet highly desirable design.  They should also note that the Carriage House and its sister dwelling, the Augustan, can be used in conjunction to create streets of rowhouses reminiscent of those of Bath, England; Charleston, South Carolina; and Savannah, Georgia.  A particularly effective arrangement is to use the Augustan as bookends with Carriage Houses in between.
